Containment Options

What works best for containing your horse when camping?

That's really a question to ask yourself.  Be open to doing some experimenting and maybe even a little preparation ahead of time.  Here's some things to consider: 

Where are you camping? What regulations/rules are there about containing your horse in the area you are staying in?  Find out what you can use for containment in the area you are staying.  Some areas allow grazing which makes hobbles or a picket line a great option, while in other areas you have to keep your horses more contained.   Also, consider if you have to pack your containment products on horseback.   The Carri-lite portable corrals work great with most horses because it is more similiar to a regular corral or stall...so the horses feel a little safer and more content.  But the Carri-lite is not an option when you are up in the mountains and not camping at a trailhead.  The OK Corral Kit, picket line, highline, hobbles or a combo would then be your choices.  

What works best with YOUR horse?  Is a combination the best option?   Whether you are using our portable corral, a highline, a picket line, hobbles or a combination...these are all great products, but you want to determine which product or combination of products works best with your horse.  If your horse is used to a regular electric fence, the OK Corral Kit is a great option.  If your horse ignores an electric fence, using a combination of a picket rope or hobbles during the day and a highline at night may be a better option.

Experiment ahead of time  Try out the picket line, hobbles, highline and portable corrals at home first...preferably in a small contained area like a corral or small pasture.  For more ideas about this see the following:
